Fuggle is revered as the classic English aroma hop and is often used in conjunction with Goldings. It can be used as a main copper hop and is also used for dry hopping. Fuggle or Fuggles hops originate in England and were first discovered in 1861 in a hop yard owned by George Stace in Kent. Some 14 years later it was officially named and introduced by Richard Fuggle of Benchley in 1875. Similar to a Styrian Golding, Fuggle is noted for its distinct European aroma and has enjoyed a long, versatile run. At its peak nearly 100 years ago Fuggle was known as a dual-use hop. Today however, as other higher alpha acid varieties have become more prevalent, Fuggle is more prominently used for its aroma and late additions.

Breeding:

Released in 1875 by Mr Richard Fuggle of Brenchley in Kent, UK from a seedling selected in 1861. Fuggle is grown in Slovenia as Styrian Goldings and in the USA as Oregon Fuggle and reputedly as US Tettnang. In the UK it is susceptible to wilt and has been produced in lower volumes in recent years and it is hoped that Wye Hops will make wilt resistant seedlings available by 2015.
